About me

As far back as I remember I wanted to be an artist. In a letter written age 14 to a close friend, I said with absolute certainty that I had finally decided to become a photographer but will study architecture just ‘in case’… These letters predate email, but they are long – often 4-5 pages back to front – and painstakingly detailed. Perhaps without realising it, I had already decided on being a writer.

The journey to journalism was a circuitous one. Still set on a life in the arts, at 18 I enrolled on a foundation course in art and design – a truly exciting year of creative explosion. This followed an ill-advised BA in textile design that killed any passion for the applied arts until a very wise professor suggested design history.

A relatively new discipline then, it was the antithesis to art history, seen to be staid, too narrow and inclusive. The subject was fresh and wild. It talked of the creative world in the context of history, of politics, of social science. It included a creative world away from Europe and America – and it resonated.

As a global nomad, settling in a single place on graduation wasn’t so easy though – some years were spent wondering cities, countries and careers – and it was in San Francisco where a travel writing post confirmed my career.

Which brings us to now. London-based, I specialise in design with a focus on cars, architecture and luxury goods for national and international media including Wallpaper*, Esquire and the BBC. I also edit Honda’s customer magazine Dream and Digital Dream, and write a weekly female motoring column for the Press Association.

For work I attend the majority of design and car shows around the world, drive the latest cars, meet with leading designers and creatives to generate features, profiles and analysis pieces. Beyond this I write about art and design from the Middle East, work as a freelance consultant for a variety of high-profile clients in the art and design world.

As an independent writer and editor, I’m able to marry my passion for art and design and my love of meeting new people, of exploring new subjects, ideologies and ultimately of communicating this.
